Science podcasts are the closest thing to free university lectures with better production values. A good one can explain quantum computing, CRISPR, or climate modelling in an hour, hosted by someone who actually works in the field.
They also have the worst retention rate of any genre. You finish an episode genuinely understanding how something works, and a week later you can recall only the topic. This guide covers picking shows that get the science right — and the one habit that makes the learning stick.
The Main Types of Science Podcast
- Explainer shows — a single concept per episode, unpacked from first principles. The best entry point for any unfamiliar field.
- Researcher interviews — long conversations with working scientists about their own work. Where you hear how science actually gets done, including the dead ends.
- Science news shows — weekly rundowns of new findings. Useful for breadth, but the format encourages overstating preliminary results, so listen critically.

How to Spot Shows That Get It Right
